Therapy in Salt Lake City

This is the only city where Athena sees clients in person. The office is a short walk or TRAX ride from downtown, the University of Utah, and the Avenues, and it is where most of the practice’s couples and family sessions happen face to face.

The Neighborhood

Central City, Just East of Downtown

The office at 24 South 600 East, Suite 2 sits in Central City, one of Salt Lake City’s older, denser neighborhoods, a few blocks east of the downtown core and close to the low end of the Avenues. It is the kind of location that works for people coming from very different directions: downtown office workers on a lunch break, University of Utah students and staff coming down from campus, and residents of the Avenues, the East Bench, and Sugar House who would rather not fight I-15 traffic for a short appointment.

For clients without a car, or who simply prefer not to drive to an appointment, TRAX access into downtown puts the office within reasonable walking distance, and street parking is typical of an established city grid rather than a suburban office park.

Because this is the practice’s home base, it is also where the bulk of couples and family sessions happen: it is easier for two or three household members to coordinate one trip downtown than to coordinate three separate telehealth logins from three different rooms.

In Person, Mostly

What In-Person Sessions Add

Being in the same room changes something about pacing, especially in couples and family work, where a raised hand or a held silence carries information a screen tends to flatten. It is also simply easier, for many people, to leave the house for an hour and treat therapy as a distinct part of the day rather than one more window on a laptop already full of them.

Telehealth is still available to Salt Lake City clients, and plenty of people mix the two: in person when the week allows it, by video during a storm that makes 600 East unpleasant to park near, or during a stretch of travel that keeps someone inside Utah but away from downtown. Athena is licensed in Utah only, so telehealth sessions still require being somewhere in the state when the appointment starts.

The Work

Individuals, Couples and Families

Salt Lake City clients bring the same range of concerns as anyone else (anxiety, depression, relationship strain, family conflict, life transitions), but the setting also draws a particular mix: university-adjacent young adults figuring out their footing, downtown professionals managing high-demand jobs, and long-time residents of the Avenues and East Bench working through family and marriage patterns that have been years in the making.

Athena is a systemically trained marriage and family therapist, Level 2 Gottman-trained for couples work, with extensive eating disorder training behind the individual work. She sees preteens, teens and adults, and she does not treat substance abuse, grief, or OCD, and she is not a prescriber.

Fees are the same whether a session happens in person or by telehealth: individual sessions are 60 minutes at $200, and couples and family sessions are 60 minutes at $250. Select Health, BCBS, UBH and University of Utah Health Plans are accepted.
