A Mid-Valley City

Older Streets, a Working Hospital District

Murray is one of the valley’s smaller, older cities, with settled neighborhoods, a downtown built around a mid-century main street, and Murray Park anchoring the residential blocks around it. It is also, by day, a hospital town: a concentration of medical campuses and clinics that employs a large share of the people who live nearby, on schedules that do not resemble a typical office week.

There is no separate office here: Athena’s only physical location is in Salt Lake City, reached from Murray by TRAX or a short drive up State Street or I-15. Telehealth is how most Murray clients meet, precisely because it removes the one variable a rotating shift schedule cannot always accommodate: a fixed commute at a fixed time.

A Common Starting Point

Burnout in Health Care and Service Work

A significant number of clients from this part of the valley work in health care or adjacent service roles: nurses, techs, medical assistants, administrative staff who absorb other people’s crises all day and are expected to go home functional. Burnout in this population rarely looks like collapse; it looks like flatness, irritability that surprises the person having it, and a creeping numbness toward work that used to matter to them.

Anxiety tends to travel alongside it: dread before a shift, difficulty shutting off afterward, a nervous system that has learned to stay on alert because the job requires it. Athena’s work here looks at both: the internal exhaustion and the household or relationship dynamics that are quietly absorbing the overflow, since a partner who has been picking up every domestic task “because your job is harder” is part of the same pattern.

This is not limited to medical staff. Shift workers, caregivers, and anyone whose job runs on other people’s emergencies tend to recognize the same fatigue.

The Work

What Sessions Focus On

Early sessions usually map the actual schedule (which weeks are worse, what recovery looks like on days off, where sleep and eating have quietly slipped) because burnout recommendations that ignore a real shift pattern do not hold up. From there the work moves toward what is sustainable given the job you actually have, not the job you wish you had, alongside whatever depression or anxiety has settled in underneath the fatigue.

Athena is a systemically trained marriage and family therapist, sees individuals, couples and families, and is not a prescriber. Telehealth sessions require you to be located in Utah, which is not an issue for anyone living or working in Murray.

Athena does not treat substance abuse, grief, or OCD. Individual sessions are 60 minutes at $200; Select Health, BCBS, UBH and University of Utah Health Plans are accepted.

Common Questions

Murray Questions

Is Murray far from the Salt Lake City office?
It is a short TRAX ride or drive up I-15 or State Street for anyone who would rather come in person; there is no separate Murray office, only telehealth.
Do you work with hospital and clinic staff specifically?
Athena sees a number of clients from Murray’s medical district workforce and is familiar with the demands of rotating shifts, on-call stretches, and the emotional weight of health care work.
Is telehealth good enough for something as serious as burnout?
Yes. Burnout responds well to consistent, regular sessions, and telehealth often makes that consistency easier to maintain around a hospital or clinic schedule than a commute would.
What does a session cost?
Individual sessions are 60 minutes at $200. Select Health, BCBS, UBH and University of Utah Health Plans are accepted.
